BCM, June 1962: Bognor Regis international Congress.—The tenth annual congress, organized by J. N. Fishlock-Lomax, failed for the first time to beat its previous year’s total entry: 324 players against 387 in 1961; still, of course, a remarkable number. Of greater significance however is the fall off in the entry for the Stevenson Memorial Tournament: not only were there fewer continental masters but the home entry was very much weaker than on previous occasions. This may be due to the comparatively high entry fee (£4 4s.) [equates to about £95 in 2022 - JS], or to the fact that the Stevenson Memorial is perhaps rather too “open”?

The S.C.C.U. Championship was won by D. Sherman (London), whose Sonneborn-Berger count was better than that of A. Brameld (Hampshire).

Southern Counties Women's Championship.—(1-3) Miss K. Northcroft, Miss Shirley Mann, and Mrs. P. van der Bergh.

Southern Counties Championship for Boys Under Eighteen.—(1) Ronald A Harris.

Southern Counties Championship for Girls Under Eighteen.—Miss Gillian Moore.

Date Notes
3 May 2022 Arthur Brameld sent me this collection of games on 3 May. I've added two extra games to the ones Arthur has collected (Wood 0-1 Lehmann, rd 3, which I think comes from StarBase 4.56—I don't know the primary source—and J H Jones 0-1 A Mazitis, rd 4, from BH Wood's Illustrated London news column) plus four part-games culled from a CHESS Magazine winning continuation feature and BH Wood's ILN column). So, at the start, we have 60 complete game scores; 4 part-games; and 66 stubs, which show the first few moves of the opening and give the length of the game. The total games played was 196. This has been a labour of love for Arthur and he's done well to collect all the games played by Bernard Cafferty, Owen Hindle, Peter Lee, Norman Stephenson and Roger Paige (though not all his own games!). Many thanks to Arthur for sharing this with BritBase - much appreciated. It would be good if BritBase readers could hunt down a few more game scores. BTW, I have also added a game from the SCCU Under-14 Championship which was held alongside at Bognor.
4 May 2022 Added some more games from the SCCU Under-14 Championship: Brian Denman sent me his draw with Ray Keene, which reminded me that there are more RD Keene games to be found on chessgames.com: I've added his wins against K Evans, M Marsh and MG Fountain. Thanks to Brian for the game and also for the correction to his younger brother's name (Tony Denman played in the under-12 section).
4 May 2022 Ulrich Tamm has contributed two part-games: (1) J Mills 0-1 I Nemet (rd 1) though the position on the board at the start of the game (looks like a King's Indian Defence) conflicts with the description of the opening given in CHESS (a Sicilian Najdorf with 6 Be2) - but see the entry below dated 26 May 2022); (2) J.Rosse 0-1 W.Mandel (rd 5). Many thanks to Ulrich.
26 May 2022 Corrections applied: it turns out that the final part of the Mills-Nemet game posted on 4 May 2022 was actually the final part of Abrahams-Brameld from the same round which already appears in the file. It seems that Deutche Schachzeitung confused these games. My thanks to Arthur Brameld for pointing this out, and also drawing my attention to the correct venue, which was the Rex Ballroom, Bognor Regis. Incidentally, Ken Norman posted a very useful and informative note on the Bognor Regis event in the English Chess Forum some years ago. In it he tells us that the tournament ran for 17 years (1953-1969), was held at the Southdean Sports Club, Middleton-on-Sea (1953-56), the Rex Ballroom (1957-62) and the Princes Ballroom, Butlins, Bognor (1963-69). Ken also mentions its founder and chief organiser J Norman Fishlock-Lomax who died on 24 March 1971, aged only 63, who deserves to be remembered for his work on this excellent and fondly-remembered event.
26 January 2023 Added a game from the SCCU Under-18 Championship, found at chessgames.com: P.Collacott 0-1 J.Hardinge (U18, rd 6).
