BOGNOR REGIS, 1954

Mr. Meek, the Southern Counties’ controller, truly spoke of this congress as “a sparkling success.” Mr. J. N. Lomax organized for success and thoroughly achieved his aim. In the main event, the Stevenson Memorial Tournament, there was a strong foreign entry in spite of the late withdrawals of Simonovitch (Yugoslavia) and Cala (Italy) owing to visa troubles.

It was a triumph for Barden to come out equal first with O’Kelly de Galway, the Belgian Champion. It made Barden, as leading home competitor, the S.C.C.U. Champion, and promises well for his prospects as member of the British team in the coming Olympics at Buenos Aires. Donner seemed tired after his recent Dutch Championship victory ahead of Euwe. Thus, against Radojcic he relaxed when he had a winning game with three united passed pawns on the Queen’s side, and allowed his opponent to carry out a mating attack. Barden, in a Ruy Lopez, sacrificed a Knight for a pawn to expose the Black King. Donner defended well, retaining the piece, when he blundered away the exchange and another pawn, to lose the ending. Wade had moments which recalled his best form, as in a crisp win in 28 moves over Wood. Penrose can readily show better results. He made a speculative Rook sacrifice on the 9th move against Wade, underestimating his opponent’s defence resources, and succumbed. Mackay’s meritorious position in such company was noteworthy and deserved. There was the usual time-trouble, but Fazekas and Friedman, in their game, combined in a successful attack on the clock provided. The social and the informal gatherings, the simultaneous displays, the lightning tournaments—all contributed to the enjoyableness of a delightful congress.
